Unlocking Strategic IT Leadership: Are vCIO Services Right for Your Business?

Prepare yourself—you might just be about to discover what’s missing from your business’s technology strategy: dedicated IT leadership that aligns your tech investments with your goals.

For small and medium-sized businesses in St. Louis and across the United States, the solution might not be hiring a full-time Chief Information Officer (CIO)—it could be engaging virtual CIO (vCIO) services. Here’s why this increasingly popular option for strategic IT leadership deserves your attention.

What Is a vCIO, and Why Should You Care?

Virtual CIOs (also known as fractional CIOs) are experienced IT leaders who provide IT consulting in St. Louis and beyond without the overhead of a full-time executive. Though they wear many hats, there are three crucial ones you’ll find them donning most often: strategist, implementation expert, and IT influencer.

The Strategist

As strategists, vCIOs analyze your business objectives and design technology roadmaps to achieve them. They identify opportunities where emerging technologies can drive growth and efficiency, ensuring every dollar spent on IT moves your business forward.

The Implementation Expert

Then, it’s time to bring these strategies to life. Whether it’s deploying new cloud solutions, strengthening cybersecurity measures, or streamlining operations through automation, vCIO services ensure smooth execution with minimal disruption to your daily operations.

The IT Influencer

Perhaps most valuably, vCIOs also serve as IT influencers within your organization. They foster a culture where technology isn’t just a necessary expense but a strategic advantage. From helping staff safely leverage AI tools to improving cybersecurity awareness (which we explored the importance of here), they ensure your entire team understands and maximizes the value of your tech investments.

A Day in the Life of Your vCIO

Don’t let ‘virtual’ confuse you—the presence (and impact) of a vCIO is very real. Here’s a glimpse into how one might spend their day supporting your business:

  • Morning: Analyzing cybersecurity reports, updating IT policies to address emerging threats, and meeting with department heads to understand their technology pain points
  • Afternoon: Evaluating potential cloud solutions to replace aging infrastructure, developing training programs for new collaboration tools, and reviewing IT budget forecasts to identify cost optimization opportunities
  • End of day: Creating documentation for standardized IT procedures, mentoring internal IT staff on best practices, and planning the next quarter’s technology initiatives

The Pros of vCIO Services: Paying One, Hiring Many

When you engage vCIO services, you’re not just hiring one person—you’re gaining access to an entire team’s expertise. As part of a third-party company, vCIOs have extensive resources to draw on. They (and their team) continually enhance their skills through working with diverse clients, bringing fresh perspectives and proven solutions to your common or new business IT challenges.

The cost advantage is clear: you get C-level IT guidance scaled to your needs, whether that’s a few hours monthly or several days weekly. Plus, since vCIOs typically work through managed service providers, they offer uniquely unbiased recommendations focused solely on your business’s success.

The Potential Cons of Hiring a vCIO for Strategic IT Leadership

While vCIOs quickly become familiar with your business, they may not have the same day-to-day immersion as an in-house CIO initially. That being said, this external perspective can prove valuable, helping identify blind spots that internal staff might miss.

A vCIO isn’t on-demand the way an in-house CIO would be, either—but they will still ensure you’re never without support. Your managed service provider’s team remains available 24/7 for urgent needs.

Partnering with a vCIO also means the end of blissful IT ignorance. You won’t be able to shy away from tackling new cybersecurity threats or addressing weak spots in your business anymore, so if you’re not ready for eagle-eyed, proactive oversight, a vCIO might not be for you.

When Should You Hire vCIO Services?

Consider engaging strategic IT leadership through a vCIO when:

  • You need help with tech lifecycle management
  • You’re struggling with accurate budget forecasting
  • You want to ensure your tech stack aligns with your goals
  • You’re growing and need standardized IT processes for everyone to follow
  • You have some internal IT staff, but they’d benefit from mentoring
  • You’re thinking long-term and want assurance that your technology strategy is setting you up for ongoing success
  • You’d like someone dedicated to risk mitigation in your business

That last point is especially pertinent if you’re in a regulated industry. When you’re working to strict compliance criteria, it’s good to have someone who knows both your technical and operational requirements and can advise accordingly.

Where to Find vCIO Services Near You

As technology becomes increasingly crucial for St. Louis businesses, more managed service providers like us are offering vCIO services. Even if you’re further afield, you could benefit—being ‘virtual’ (as opposed to an in-house member of your team), these strategic leaders don’t need to be near you in order to enact significant change in your organization.

That means plenty of options that you’ll want to narrow down. During your search, look for a provider with:

  • Proven experience delivering IT consulting
  • A track record of helping similar-sized businesses in your industry
  • Clear communication and regular reporting on strategic initiatives
  • A comprehensive team supporting their vCIO services

The rise of vCIO services reflects a broader shift in how businesses approach strategic IT leadership. For local SMBs, it also represents an opportunity to access enterprise-level IT guidance without enterprise-level investment—and that’s an invaluable addition to any growing business.

In 2022, Hadley and her husband Corbitt decided to return to St. Louis to join the family business. As part of the second generation, Hadley brought fresh perspectives from her time at AT&T and was drawn to helping the company grow the right way by implementing scalable systems and processes, while maintaining the core value-centric culture.

As a Project Manager, Hadley facilitated technical projects and the development of interdepartmental playbooks while gaining a deep understanding of the inner workings of the business operations. Now, as the Project Management Lead, Hadley is known for her driven, process-oriented leadership and her dedication to finding solutions for every challenge no matter how daunting it may first seem.

Born in Yokohama, Japan, and raised in Malaysia and St. Louis, Corbitt developed a unique global perspective. He graduated from Randolph-Macon College with a degree in Political Science and Spanish where he was a member of the men’s basketball team.

Before joining Anderson Technologies, Corbitt built a successful career at AT&T which initially started in the B2B Sales Development Program – a highly-competitive sales training where he was stack-ranked against his 100+ peers based on quota attainment to determine where in the company one was placed. In Chicago, as part of the National Fiber Organization, he became a top-performing sales professional, selling AT&T’s fiber, networking, and cybersecurity services and learning the value of relationship building, perseverance, and grit. Later, as a Senior Sales Solutions Engineer at AT&T headquarters in Dallas, he refined his technical expertise, leadership skills, and consulting abilities.

Currently pursuing his MBA at Washington University in St. Louis, Corbitt blends strategic thinking, technical knowledge, and a client-first approach to help Anderson Technologies continue serving companies and organizations across the country.
